Helpfulness

By now I have eight or nine Havahart traps, ranging in size from "very small" to a couple that are large enough to trap something in the size range of a medium-large coyote. I bought my second new 1025 a couple of weeks ago, but have had problems with one door consistently sticking at about half-way closed, allowing the intended target to escape. I can see *no* obvious damage or distortion of the trap anywhere, and have been unable to resolve the issue myself. I called Havahart customer service agent Victor, and since I had purchased the trap while on the road, at a place too far away to make a return trip, Victor offered to send me a replacement. The 1025 was not currently in stock, however, so he asked if there was another model that might work for me. It turns out that the one-door Model 1026 is the same basic size, and I do think this might work better for gray squirrels. Even when set with only one door left open for entry, I have had gray squirrels step on the trip plate, and then turn around so fast that the door had not *quite* had time to close and lock, allowing them to escape. Victor and I discussed bait, and while peanut butter smeared on a small piece of cardboard works well for just about any target animal, during the winter months, especially, flying squirrels favor sweet fruit, with small sections of prune being very effective. (Since flying squirrels don't hibernate, or build up large fat reserves - if they did, they could no longer "fly" well - they're always on the lookout for concentrated, high-energy foods.) Many thanks to Victor for his great customer service! MarkT

The 2-door version is NOT designed for squirrels.

The 2-door version is NOT designed for squirrels as the trap sensor is located too close to the door. Squirrels will stretch themselves out to eat things and when the trap hits, they shoot right back out before the door closes. They can do that because part of their body is still outside the trap. Will try the 1-door version next as it looks to have a longer distance to the trigger.

Thank you for this feedback. We're sorry to hear about this experience with this trap. Our two door traps can be set with only one door open. When doing so, we recommend tying the bait further back into the trap so it is more difficult to for the animal to access. Reach out to us via the Contact Us page for additional assistance.
This trap is too small for squirrels

This trap is too small for Texas squirrels even with one door shut and placing bait as far back as you can. Go for the Medium trap instead...IMHO.

Looks like it should work ...but

Looks like it should work but, so far, squirrels are winning while I'm learning lessons. Note, it is advertised for squirrels but may not be up the task and now that I've used it I can't return it. Fortunately (for me) my first "visitor" was a big skunk that did not trigger the door mechanism. A couple of squirrels have managed to steal the peanuts and eat the peanut butter before one finally tripped the doors. Unfortunately, he was faster than the door closed and was able to push it open before it locked. My security camera captured it all on video. Right now I'm 0-3 but this game isn't over and I'll change my rating if I start winning.

We are sorry to hear about this experience! Have you tested the trap on its own to see if the doors lock shut? We recommend setting it as a one door trap and placing the bait at the far side, back by the closed door. You can also try placing the bait in a PVC pipe and tying it from the roof of the trap above the trigger or the back of the trap. These will help ensure that the animal is fully inside the trap before the door closes. The trap is covered under a 1-year replacement policy. Please give us a call directly for help!

Red Squirrels can get out of this type of trap even with the locking mechanism in place. Took the last one less than 4 minutes.

We're sorry to hear you had a squirrel escape! When the locking mechanism activates correctly, it should prevent animals from freeing themselves. Please contact us at 855-542-8242 with any questions, we're happy to help.

The Havahart small cage trap worked as advertised. I set the trap near where we were having a problem with a red squirrel and I caught it within hours of the first try. The red squirrel is happily (us) relocated where it will not be a problem.

I bought this trap because it had a squirrel on the package. This is false advertising because this squirrel actually went in the trap and tripped both doors and got out! His tail probably kept the door from closing all the way. The next time, I closed one door and put the bait at the closed door thinking it would have to go through the bait shelf and trip the door. He made it through the other side and took the bait and got out without tripping the door!!! Bad design.. I did catch a mouse, that worked!

We are sorry to hear about this experience! If your squirrel is on the larger size, a larger trap may be needed to effectively catch the critter! We appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback with us and will be sure to pass along these comments to the Product Manager for further review. We are only ever looking to improve upon our traps, which is why your feedback is so critical. It is good to know that this product is backed by a 30 day return policy and 1 year replacement policy. Please give us a call at 855-542-8242 for assistance. - Rachel
Excellent for chipmunks

This is a great product to catch chipmunks. Easy to set. I caught 4 chipmunks in 4 days. I did catch 1 squirrel as well, but for squirrels you should get a larger trap. Peanut butter works perfectly as a bait. Thank you Woodstream !
