Just not a good trap.
I've always had a Havahart trap or two in the garage to fend off the invasions of squirrels and chipmunks into the house. But this one simply does not work. The plastic was the first hint that quality took a nose dive. It seems that, due to the wobbly nature of the design, either the the arm or the door gets caught, and the trap doesn't close. Every morning the bait is gone, the door is jammed, and the chipmunk has free run of the house.
Please, please, please.... bring back the old designs.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. We’re sorry to hear it didn’t work as expected. The door and trigger mechanism are designed to move freely, so issues like the door catching or not closing properly aren’t typical.
To help improve performance, make sure the trap is placed on a flat, stable surface and that the trigger arm and door move smoothly without rubbing or obstruction. Using a small amount of bait placed behind the trigger plate can also help ensure proper activation.

I can forgive the fact the trigger rod falls off very easily, what I can't forgive is that Havahart doesn't sell replacement parts on its website given the fact that it s a known issue. I guess forcing people to spend $40 for a new trap because of a 50 cent part is a good (albeit very scumbaggish) way to generate sales....
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. We’re sorry for the trouble with the trigger bar. A common issue we’ve identified with model #1026 is that the trigger bar can come loose if it isn’t pushed firmly enough into the plastic during setup. Making sure it is fully seated helps keep it secure when the trap is triggered.

WHY IS THIS THING PLASTIC?!

0 stars!
We bought this trap at ACE Hardware a couple days ago and pulling it out of the box I couldn't believe that part of the trap was made from plastic! Not a good sign, but we figured we'd try it. This thing is so shoddily made. The leg gets stuck on the cage so the door doesn't close -- goodbye squirrel! Also, we're in Arizona and this thing wouldn't last a summer with our sun. Definitely returning. So disappointing that a brand that used to have quality is sliding.
We’re sorry to hear about your experience with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. The trap should close smoothly and securely once triggered. In some cases, misalignment during setup or debris near the door can cause it to stick. Please contact our Consumer Care Team at 1-855-542-8242 for assistance under our product guarantee. We’re available Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 7 PM EST.

Trap didn't close. Pack rat still free

Oct 23, 2025
I picked up this trap at Lowes and took it up to our cabin to catch a pack rat. I set the trap on the roof where I know it visits every night. In the morning, the trap was still open but the bait was gone. When he tripped the the trap, the two metal parts hooked each other not allowing the door to close. It was my last opportunity to catch him. He'll be free all winter. I hope he doesn't figure out how to get inside.
We’re sorry to hear about your experience with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. The trigger bar should move freely when pushed firmly into the plastic fitting during setup, which helps prevent it from catching on the wire frame. Placing the bait toward the far end of the trap can also help ensure the animal enters fully before activation. If you plan to reset the trap in the future, these adjustments may improve success.

Just say No

Bought this and it just doesn't work. Terrible construction, nonfunctioning.
I have had the Havahart 0745 Chipmunk Trap for 20 years and it finally lost the tab. Worked great. Replaced it with this model and it just doesn't work. The lever is too hard to push so the weight of the chipmunk and even heavy squirrels can't set it off. Just junk.
We’re sorry to hear about your experience with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. The trigger bar should move smoothly when positioned correctly, and pushing the bar firmly into the plastic fitting during setup helps ensure proper sensitivity. Making sure the trap is level and centered over an active tunnel or pathway can also help smaller animals apply enough pressure to activate it. Your feedback will be shared with our product team as we continue improving performance and ease of use.

We have several older & larger all metal Havahart traps that we have had for years & they are well made & very effective .Recently we needed a smaller trap to catch a pack rat living in our barn . We purchased a small animal , single door trap & I was surprised to see half of the trap was made of plastic . The trigger rod comes in 2 pieces with a plastic clip to hold it together . My first thought is how long until part of the trigger rod gets lost & second thought was how long until the plastic clip that holds the rod together breaks ?? I set up the trap & manually triggered it , first time the trigger rod got hung up on the plastic on the side of the trap & door didn't lock closed , second try the plastic clip that connects the trigger rod fell off . Hope you didn't pay someone a lot of money to redesign this trap for you , if you did they must have laughed all the way to the bank . We are returning this trap to the store where we purchased it ...
We’re sorry to hear about your experience with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. The new design includes plastic components to reduce weight and simplify setup, but they should still provide reliable performance. Ensure the trigger bar is pushed firmly into the plastic fitting during assembly to prevent it from loosening or jamming. We understand your frustration and appreciate your detailed feedback—it will be shared with our product team for continued improvement.

Havahart has a heart!

Havahart has a heart! Many people complained about losing the trigger rod, rendering their trap useless, and they made that clear in their reviews. I was one of them...got excited that the trap worked well and captured the squirrel that was invading my attic, but in my elation, I did not pay attention to the trigger rod and it must have fallen off somewhere in the woods during the squirrel releasing process. The company is aware of this flaw and is working to correct it. In the meantime PAY ATTENTION to the rod! I found that the trap otherwise worked fine, caught the little invader the first time I set it. Havahart is sending me a replacement trap, free of charge.
We’re sorry to hear about your experience with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. We understand how frustrating it can be to lose the arming rod. The previous folding-door design was indeed popular, and we appreciate your feedback on it. For this model, ensuring the trigger bar is pushed firmly into the plastic fitting during setup helps prevent it from coming loose. If you continue to have trouble with the trap, please contact our Consumer Care Team at 1-855-584-2867, Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM ET, for further assistance.

Zero out of 5 stars!
The design is defective!
I found problems during testing, before adding bait.
The trip rod catches on the cage, preventing the door from closing.
As designed, the trip rod is caught by the bait tray handle when an animal steps on the front of the tray. This prevents the door from closing.
When the tray is tripped from the rear, the trip rod tip gets caught in the cage screen, preventing the door from closing.
We’re sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with the Havahart® Small 1-Door Live Animal Trap. It sounds like the trip rod may not be seated correctly, which can cause it to catch on the cage or bait tray handle. The rod should be pushed firmly into the plastic fitting to ensure smooth movement when triggered. This setup step helps prevent the door from getting stuck when activated. Please contact our Consumer Care Team at 1-855-584-2867, Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM ET, so we can provide detailed setup guidance or assist further.

If traps are damaged, it is our recommendation that the trap be replaced so it does not unintentionally injure future catches. Images are available on our website.

Question by: Sandra mueller on Apr 8, 2024, 1:05 PM
Please follow the steps below to set this trap -
1. Turn the Door Lock to the open position.
2. Holding the door open, place the bait behind the Trip Plate.
3. Remove the Trigger Rod from the top of the trap. Attach the plastic end to the Trigger Rod Connection.
4. Press down on the assembled Trigger Rod. Meanwhile, lift the Trip Plate Trigger and gently position the flat end of the Trigger Rod under the Trip Plate Trigger so the door is held open and the Trip Plate is level.
