The Havahart® Large 1-Door Live Animal Trap is designed by trapping experts to be the most effective, reliable and durable trap of its kind. It is carefully constructed with a fine-tuned tripping mechanism that specially targets heavier critters like cats and raccoons - eliminating false triggers - and a powerful trap door that delivers quick, secure captures.
Simple to Operate
You don't have to be a pro to use this Havahart® large trap. Its design allows users of all experience levels to trap, transport, and release raccoon-sized animals with very little effort.
For You: A solid door and handle guard protect you from contact with a trapped animal, and the carrying handle allows you to hold the trap away from your body while an animal is inside.
For the Animal: A strong door lock keeps the animal safely inside the trap, while smooth, rolled internal trap edges prevent injuries to animals as they are being transported, or as they struggle to escape.
Havahart® Traps are Built to Last
Havahart® builds the strongest, most durable traps with premium materials, intended to endure harsh weather and unpredictable animal behavior. Traps are constructed of industrial-strength, one-piece wire mesh, which is galvanized for maximum resistance to rust and corrosion. A solid door and steel reinforcements add to the durability of the trap, ensuring an even longer trap life.

It is a very sturdy trap for up to housecat and raccoon size animals. A very large raccoon might need something bigger. Setting the trap door is simple and the release works with only light pressure. I expect this trap to last for several years and capture many unwanted animals for relocation.

This product comes in two ...

This product comes in two parts - the trap itself and a trigger rod. The rod is separate - a small piece of metal and plastic. It is easy to lose - and i lost it. On calling the company for a replacement i. was told they do not sell replacement parts. so now my options are to try and make one myself or buy a whole new trap. Be careful you dont lose your trigger rod if you buy this brand of trap!
Thank you for the feedback. I'm going to make sure it reaches our design team.

Any animal with get out ...

Any animal with get out when the drive to survive kicks in. Be careful, as an aggressive, stron animal WILL get out of this lightweight built trap which may, or may not, contain the animal for more than a few minutes. I lined the cage with 1/2" steel cloth to also trap small squirrels as the door plate is very sensitive - to even a few ounces. However, containing determined animals is unlikely. A few cents more on some key components would make all the difference in the world ... but as is, I know it isn't up to the job.
When my husband and I moved into our house in the country about a year ago, we were unaware there was a skunk infestation underneath our gazebo. We tried EVERYTHING to get them to move along - every skunk repellent including sprays, moth balls, wolf urine granules, you name it. We also tried bright lights and loud sounds, but this had probably been going on so long that they would rather withstand our onslaught than move. We finally decided to buy this particular trap and bait it with cat food - I've got a brother nearby who has been incredibly helpful in "dispatching" the skunks while I do all the cleanup afterwards. We have now successfully captured six skunks and all six have been "dispatched" in this trap and it works perfectly even after all that. We did also catch a large, angry feral cat once, who also couldn't bust out. 10/10 on this trap.
From day one the trapdoor tends to remain open while rabbits and squirrels eat the nuts, carrots, and/or apple slices. I am very disappointed with your trap and will never by another one and I will not recommend the Havahart trap to others,
New model 1085 does not ...allow the trip plate to rise high ebouth to spring the door closed. There is no rear access to set bait or clean.

The new model 1085 trigger mechanism linkage is too loose so the trip plate lays flat on the bottom regardless of where the sensitivity knob is set. The wire rope cable on the older trap was better.
New model 1085 does not have an access from the rear of the trap to set bait in place or for cleaning.
I recently ordered a second Model 1079 trap. Our original older Havahart works great, but we needed to set traps in two locations on our property, so we came back to the Havahart brand. The new trap is very similar to the old one, but I'm very disappointed in the quality of the trap door. The door metal seem thinner; it's not reinforced as well as in the older model; and in the closed position, the door is not centered within the frame of the trap, causing it to shift side to side during set-up. Therefore, I'm not confident that this trap will securely hold a larger animal.
I called Havahart to ask about their return policy, and the company will not consider a return for refund unless I have tried catching an animal within 30 days of receiving the trap to confirm that the trap does or does not work properly. Unfortunately, I didn't open the shipping box immediately because the raccoons had stopped tearing up our lawn. The trap is in its as-shipped and labeled new condition, so it will go into storage for now.
The Havahart brand is still better than most, so I would recommend their traps for a first-time purchaser.
Raccoon bent the door lock frame and escaped.
I need to replace the inadequate wire frame with something stronger.
Have you beefed up this frame and if so do you sell this part.
Seems a shame to have to buy a new one .
Bought my furst Havahart, size 3 (12x12x36) for $20 new in 1962 when Havahart was in Ossining, NY. 've used four different sized traps to catch everything you could imagine. Quality, sturdy traps that are fun to use. I don't think they will EVER wear out!

Is this trap collapsible? I’d like to ship it overseas, so the more compact, the better.

My large one door trap needs another door. There are two pieces to it. The larger piece or “solid metal piece is fine. I need the smaller “wire piece that prevents the door assembly from being opened by what ever is in the cage. Can I get one?

I’m what is the difference between a model 1085 and the 1078 and 1079?
Question by: Gilbert ewing on Jul 31, 2025, 3:27 PM
Thank you very much for contacting us. It would be our pleasure to assist you.
Here is a brief comparison of the three models:
⦁ Model 1085 is the most advanced, with one-hand setup and adjustable sensitivity—ideal for frequent or precise use.
⦁ Model 1078 is smaller and simpler, perfect for small animals and occasional use.
⦁ Model 1079 is similar in size to the 1085 but lacks the Easy Set and sensitivity features, making it a more basic option for larger animals.
