Is the Havahart® Medium 1-Door Animal Trap the best live trap for capturing flying squirrels indoor? Or is there a better model that you recommend?
Question by: Eric Reichenberg on Jan 8, 2025, 2:21 PM
Thank you for your inquiry. The Havahart® 1078 Medium 1-Door Animal Trap does work for capturing squirrels, but it is on the larger side since it is also designed to handle skunks and rabbits. If you're looking for something more suitable for flying squirrels indoors, the 1078 might be a bit bigger than what you need.
If you prefer a smaller option, I would recommend the Havahart® 1026. It’s more compact and still effective for safely capturing flying squirrels.

what is the difference between the 1083 and the 1078, both $59.99. I am wanting to catch rabbits
Question by: Joseph T Oberman on May 5, 2025, 1:40 PM
Thank you very much for contacting us. It would be our pleasure to assist you.
The model 1083 has a shorter, more compact design with one-handed operation and a sensitivity screw.
and the model 1078 is longer, offers additional protection features, and is also suitable for larger animals like hogs.

Our rabbits can't seem to set the traps off. I've been trying to make the plate more sensitive but the suggested method of setting only the tip of the pressure plate arm on the door isn't possible - the door will only let the arm latch on if fully engaged. Are there any tips you could offer?
Question by: Dee Jay on Jun 11, 2025, 6:27 AM
Hi, thank you so much for your question! The instructions suggest familiarizing yourself with the trap and letting the rabbits get used to it by placing it where they usually feed, with the doors propped open. Baiting is optional at this stage. It also helps if the rabbits are a bit hungry, so you might pause feeding for a couple of days. Lastly, check with your local Game Commission for proper handling once the animal is caught.

How do you release a skunk?
Question by: Edward York on Aug 28, 2025, 10:39 AM
Hi, thank you for reaching us. Please, follow these steps to release a skunk:
Hold a large towel or sheet in front of you, down to your toes, as you walk towards the trap.
Approach a trapped skunk calmly, humming softly as you near the trap in order to avoid startling the animal.
Drop the towel or sheet over the cage once you reach it. Skunks don't like to spray if they can't see their target.
This method can be used not only with skunks, but with all types of animals.

Sorry, I should have been more specific in relation to how do you release a skunk. Specifically, after a skunk is trapped and covered. How should you transport it and then release it in the new location without getting sprayed..
Question by: Edward York on Aug 28, 2025, 6:02 PM
To release a skunk without getting sprayed, move slowly and speak softly to avoid startling it. Cover yourself with a blanket and gently drape another blanket over the trap, as skunks typically won't spray what they can't see. Carefully transport the covered trap at least 10 miles away if local laws permit. The skunk will give a warning—stomping its feet and raising its tail—before it sprays.

Hi, thank you for reaching us. I'm sorry to know that you needed a part for your trap. Unfortunately, we don't sell replacement parts.

Is there anyway to make the trap more sensitive? I keep finding my trap empty of bait but the door did not engage. I am trying to catch squirrels who keep out smarting me. I am using peanuts which they keep devoring but the trap does not engage. It seems like they are not heavy enough to set off the trap.

Hi, thank you so much for your question. I apologize, but there is no way to make the trap more sensitive.

Is the model 1078 available with the Easy Set feature?
Question by: Roger on Dec 4, 2025, 1:16 PM
No — the Model 1078 does not come with the “Easy Set®” feature. That model uses a standard spring-loaded door and manual setup. If you prefer the “Easy Set®” design, you’ll need to choose one of the dedicated Easy-Set models (e.g., model 1085 for a large trap or model 1083 for a small trap).

How does, the locking mechanism work to set the trap?
Question by: Edwin bell on Jan 23, 2026, 2:02 PM
On the Havahart® Medium 1-Door Animal Trap, the locking mechanism works by setting the door in the open position and engaging the lock rod so the door stays open until an animal enters. The design uses gravity and the trigger plate to hold the door open and then snap it shut when the trap is activated.
