Poor trigger mechanism By Marty

The trap is well built well but the trigger needs too be redesigned. I have tried to hair trigger the trap but it still won't trip with a chipmunk. I have another trap that has a roller where the trigger sets and works great. I have been using livetraps for 40 years and have never had a haveheart trap that didn't work correctly.. I will try to put some weight on the pan and see if that works.

Hello Marty,

Thank you for providing this feedback! We apologize for this experience and hope the additional weight helps to increase the sensitivity of the trap. The trap should trip with little pressure to the tip plate. We recommend setting it and tripping it manually to test the pressure. If it takes a good amount of force to trip, please feel free to contact us directly for further assistance. Our Consumer Relations Team can be reached at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242).

MODEL 1077 Follow Up Review By Brickman

After a month of trapping squirrels I have found what seems to work very well in trapping them. I thought I would share what I have learned during this time period. In total I have trapped 11 squirrels. First I did fasten the trap to the ground by extending 10 inch metal rods through the trap side into the ground in four locations. Next I really baited the trap with black oil sunflower seeds, acorns, peanuts and hazel nuts. I strung the nuts on two thin wires above and to the rear of the trip plate. Be careful to keep them at least one inch from the top, side and rear of the trap or the squirrel will get them from outside the trap. Next I dug a trench about 1/2 inch below trap being 1 inch wide. Half of the trench was under the trip plate and half was exposed to the rear of the trip plate. I filled the trench with seeds and acorns. Lastly I placed seeds and pieces of the acorns at the entrance of the trap and in the trap. When the squirrels see those hanging peanuts and Hazel nuts they go for them in time. Be patient and soon you will be trapping squirrels. This has worked for me and now I do appreciate these traps.

Model 1077 Review By Brickman

The traps I purchased model 1077 are well built but function poorly. I observed a squirrel actually push a trap over and that did not trigger the trap release. There is so little distance behind the trigger plate that the squirrel does not need to reach it to get the bait. I buried the bait, I hung the bait inside PVC, I placed the bait under the handle. The squirrel gets the bait and leaves the trap. I watched squirrel after squirrel push the light trap off the buried bait and even dig out the buried bait from outside the trap. I have to put a brick on the trap and fasten the corners to the ground to keep it from being pushed around. Like I said the trap fails to function. I think it may be best to return the five traps I purchased. Also when unboxed the traps all of the handles were installed differently and none of them correctly. I had to reinstall all if them. This is a shame because the traps are quality built.

We apologize for this experience. When trapping a squirrel outdoors, we recommend anchoring the trap or placing a heavy object on the top to prevent animals from tipping it over and stealing the bait. To increase the sensitivity of the trap, we recommend placing a washer or pebble on the bait tray. Also, tying the bait from the roof of the trap right over the bait plate or in the far back works well to make sure the squirrel has to maneuver on the trigger plate, increasing the chances of a catch.

Model 1077 Unboxing By Brickman

I purchased five model 1077 traps which arrived all at the same time. Upon removing them from their individual boxes I noticed that the handles were all installed differently and none of them correctly. Not a single handle resembled how they appeared on the box or the accompanying instructions. Two handles were installed diagonally. Two handles were installed on the right side of the trap and one handle was installed on the left side of the trap. None of the handles would lay flush with the top of the trap on the protected area. To lay flush the handles protruded outside the top protected area. I had to remove all five handles and reinstalled them as illustrated on the box and the instructions. Now they lay flush entirely on the protected top of each trap. I also purchased in the past four of the model 1079-B trap. They work fine and are the same design as the model 1077. I expect the model 1077 to perform just as well. A word about the model 1079-B. They were the first traps I purchased from Havahart. Upon trapping one of the handles did break. That occurrence is what led me to closely examine the handles. I am very much surprised to see that, as it appears to me, that none of the five handles on the model 1077 were correctly installed.

terrible By unsatisfied

The trigger plate can support a brick! I actually did put a brick on it. The squirrel keeps taking the bait without triggering the trap. Very poor design. The trigger plate is too short. At best, the squirrel can only put its front paws on it. Since the front half of a squirrel doesn't weigh as much as a brick, it doesn't work. It might work for bigger animals, but not for squirrels.

Still no squirrels! By Angie

I bought the Havahart 1077 trap to catch grey squirrels as they are wrecking havoc in my garden! I have now set the trap as suggested using various baits including crackers with peanut butter, unshelled unsalted peanuts and shelled peanuts, without success. I have set the trap finely to make tripping it easy, on the ground and on a flat roof. I have caught four hedgehogs (or the same one four times!) and every single time the bait has been taken by 'someone' - but still no squirrels! I live in the UK. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Did not work! By Cordell

Well I bought a Havahart squirrel trap... and I set it and I caught a squirrel pretty quick... but in just a FEW MINUTES he ate all of the peanut butter (less than 1 tablespoon) and then escaped. Ha! I think they are up there in my attic waiting for me to refill their dinner plate. Do you have a different trap that is hard to escape?  You can have this one back. I think the squirrels would give your trap a 5 star review. Ha!

Hello Dennis,

We apologize for this experience and appreciate the time taken to share this valuable feedback.

When tested on its own, does the door of this trap lock?  If so, the squirrel may not have been fully inside the trap when the door closed, preventing it from locking.

Please contact our Consumer Relations Team directly at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242).  We are happy to offer troubleshooting assistance.

Q.Am trying to capture rabbits with one door 1077.   I've been successful in luring them in with apple but they apparently aren't stepping on the plate or are too light to spring the trap.  Any ideas on how to get them to step on the plate?

To prevent bait theft, we recommend tying the bait to the trap or digging a small hole under the trigger plate and placing the bait inside. This will cause the animal to enter the trap further and work harder to access the bait, putting pressure on the trip plate and increasing the chances of a successful catch. If the animal appears too light for the trap, small magnets or weights can be placed on the trigger plate.

Q. Just got the one door, 1077. Trying to catch rats and small skunk. I understand how to set the trap however what is the safest way  to open the trap to release the animal. I have looked through your website and found nothing.

Information for trapping and releasing animals, such as skunks can be found under our How To section at the link below. Information for trapping a wide variety of animals is available on these pages. http://www.havahart.com/how-to-trap-skunks

Q.I borrowed a neighbor's two door medium trap and have it set with only one door open, baited with an apple and a carrot.  The rabbit I am after is ignoring it.  It is a larger rabbit.  Could it be avoiding the trap because it is too small?

This trap is designed for average sized rabbits and other similarly sized animals. To help lure the rabbit in, camouflage can be added using leaves or sticks. When adding these, be sure that the camouflage does not interfere with the trap triggering or closing. If the rabbit is too large to enter the trap, a different model is recommended. Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) for additional assistance.
