Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bait correctly. Two of these came in two days ago. The same day i got them and was figuring out how to chain them together, what length of chain to use , size of locks, etc. I saw a rat run from a bush next to my back door to a tunnel underneath my garage. I baited the traps with peanut butter on a strip of cardboard which just fit behind the rigger plate. I smushed sweet corn kernels onto the PB for added added attractiveness. Success! Last night I thought I'd try two halves of a breakfast roll smeared with PB and corn. Failure! I even heard metallic sounds as they were removing the bait. It's back to the cardboard. I believe the cardboard gets stuck in the grid work of the trap and the rat springs the door. Maybe tomorrow I'll send another one to Davey Jone's Locker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Squirrel Trap I set 5 of these traps on the roofs of my bird aviaries under some avocado trees which the squirrels damage. I baited the traps with small avocados and some bird seed. Within 45 minutes the first squirrel was trapped, so I moved one of the other traps to that location, and caught another one a couple hours later. The traps are extremely easy to set and bait, and they are a perfect size to keep the squirrels safe and secure until releasing them. This trap is beautifully constructed and very strong. I highly recommend this trap for squirrels.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Problems I bought the squirrel trap and so far I have been doing a wonderful job of feeding him. He loves peanut butter and is big enough to spring the door release, however - he hasn't done it yet!. I have been playing with the positioning of the release and it seems to have 2 settings - hard to trip and wont stay cocked. I can't seem to set it in-between. While I hate to do it, I may have to re-engineer that release.

Am trying to capture rabbits with one door 1077.   I've been successful in luring them in with apple but they apparently aren't stepping on the plate or are too light to spring the trap.  Any ideas on how to get them to step on the plate?

Asked by: Kevin K
To prevent bait theft, we recommend tying the bait to the trap or digging a small hole under the trigger plate and placing the bait inside. This will cause the animal to enter the trap further and work harder to access the bait, putting pressure on the trip plate and increasing the chances of a successful catch. If the animal appears too light for the trap, small magnets or weights can be placed on the trigger plate.

I borrowed a neighbor's two door medium trap and have it set with only one door open, baited with an apple and a carrot.  The rabbit I am after is ignoring it.  It is a larger rabbit.  Could it be avoiding the trap because it is too small?

Asked by: nobrien1
This trap is designed for average sized rabbits and other similarly sized animals. To help lure the rabbit in, camouflage can be added using leaves or sticks. When adding these, be sure that the camouflage does not interfere with the trap triggering or closing. If the rabbit is too large to enter the trap, a different model is recommended. Regarding the traditional, small, one-door trap, something is bent or misadjusted as the trap takes a lot more pressure on the plate to trigger. Do you have some instructions to adjust the sensitivity back to what it was? Thank you.

Asked by: Clifford
The sensitivity of the trap cannot be adjusted. If the trap is bend or damaged a new trap may need to be purchased. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Where should I place the bait in my trap?

Asked by: Cathy
The bait should be placed in a way that requires the animal to fully enter the trap and step on the trigger plate in order to reach it. For this model, it’s best to place the bait directly beyond the trip plate, toward the back wall of the trap.  For more baiting tips, click here.

What is the benefit of a 1-door trap versus a 2-door trap?

Asked by: Cathy
If used as directed, 1-door traps and 2-door traps are equally effective. Whether you purchase a 1 or 2-door trap is a matter of preference. Some trappers prefer to use 1-door traps because they are easier to bait; since the back end is closed, you can place the bait beyond the trigger plate ensuring that the animal walks further into the trap before reaching it. Others prefer to use 2-door traps, as an animal might be more confident in entering the cage if it can see through to the other side.Regardless of your preference, Havahart® offers both one-door and two-door traps to satisfy all consumers.

How can I test my trap to make sure that it works properly?

Asked by: Cathy
Start by setting your trap. Using a pen or another object (not your finger), carefully touch the trip plate from either end, applying just a bit of pressure. The door should quickly snap closed.
