This trap is useless against voles. Chipmunks and larger, yes, but voles dance in, eat a big meal and dance out. By Frustrated Vole Trapper

I purchased two of these one door Haveahart extra small traps for a vole infestation and these tras are 100% ineffective against voles. Every day and night for the past week I’ve sat on my patio and watched voles enter the traps and walk all over the trigger plate and nothing happens aside from voles having a nice dinner. Voles are much too light for this trap. This trap does catch chipmunks as I caught and released 3 so far. If chipmunks were my problem I’d have given it 5 stars. But it’s marketed as a vole trap and one star is more than it deserves as a vole trap, sorry. Meanwhile the voles continue to multiply and these traps will go in the next yard sale. I’m shopping for traps that will actually catch voles now.

Hello,

Thank you for providing this feedback! We are sorry to hear of this experience. From this description, it sounds as if the sensitivity of the trap needs to be adjusted. We recommend adding pebbles/washers to the trip plate. This added weight will increase the chances of a catch.

We hope this information was helpful! Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) with any questions or for additional assistance.

Poor release / trigger plate design By Rob

I have tried 5 times to load a peanut butter bait inside to the end of the trap passed the trigger plate but all 5 times the squirrel was able to enter the cage and leave with the bait. The trigger plate takes too much weight to release the lever assembly and there is no way to adjust the release mechanism. Very poor design.

Hello Rob,

We appreciate the time taken to provide this feedback and apologize for this experience! From this description, it sounds as if placing a pebble/washer on the trip plate will be helpful. This small adjustment will increase the sensitivity of the trap and raise the chances of a catch.

Placing the bait under the trip pedal also works well as it forces the squirrel to dig at the plate. Both of these suggestions should help to create the desired results!

not effective By disappointed

whatever the critter is- it is able to get in and get peanut butter from plate without tripping the doors. I tried putting peanut butter at very end, past the bait plate but it just ate it from outside the cage.

We recommend increasing the sensitivity of the trap by adding something small to the trigger plate, such as a pebble or washer. Tying the bait from the roof of the trap above the trigger plate also works well to ensure the animal is fully inside the trap and has to maneuver on the trigger plate, increasing the chances of a catch.

poor trigger design By vincent17

I find this trap to be poorly designed with it having a "sticky trigger mechanism" resulting in the failure to catch the animal even though it consumed all the bait.

Not so great By JerryBro

QA forgot to test floor lever on one of the three I bought and no matter how I adjust it, it still does not rotate smoothly. On another trap, an aggressive ground squirrel managed to break the latch on the door and escaped. The trap is now useless unless I can buy another door. The solid top is a bad feature as I use seeds to lure my victims into the trap. The solid top makes it hard to put the seeds in. The wind frequently blows the doors down. The birds or squirrels climbing on the trap trigger the door to close. In general, I do not recommend this trap.

Easy to use and Operate - But will not trigger By Todd_P

I bought this Xsmall 1 door trap (model 0745) to catch some chipmunks around the yard. I applied peanut butter and sunflower seeds on the far end of the trigger (away from the door). The chipmunks go in, eat the peanut butter and seeds, then leave. The trap never springs. The trigger mechanism is too stiff. I have tried some different lubricants to try and free it up, but because of the design of the trigger, it is way too stiff. The metal rod for the trigger barely fits through the hoops holding it in place. I have the Xsmall 2 door trap (model 1020), and the medium 2 door trap (model 1030-B) - both work exceptionally well, but I am not happy with this one.

Hello Todd,

Thank you for sharing this experience. When baiting this trap, we recommend either tying the bait to the trap or digging a small hole under the trap and placing the bait inside. This will cause the animal to work harder and engage the trigger plate in order to access the bait, increasing the chances of a successful catch.
