Poor design By Kurt

Range of motion on trigger was so restricted I had to cut bars away from the rods so trigger could be set properly. Clips used to hold cage are weak compared to other designs.

Trigger Mechanism Not Dependable By StillWaitingToTrap

This is our third Havahart trap but the first X-large. Although it is very sturdy, the trigger mechanism leaves much to be desired. Very sloppy in play. Four nights in a row we watched the targeted animal enter, eat, lay down, and leave without the trip plate springing. We had to do a lot a wire bending and testing to get it to work dependably. Hopefully tonight is the night!

Better than killing pests. By N/a

The trigger for the door is like a hook. There is only one way it works, no way to make it more sensitive. Bait is constantly stolen, works occasionally, many times coons walk in, grab bait and leave. I keep a trail camera by the trap to monitor it's performance. I prefer to relocate rather than kill pests.

We apologize for this experience. To increase the sensitivity, we recommend adding something small onto the trigger plate such as a washer or a pebble. Tying the bait from the roof of the trap above the trigger plate or burying the bait under the trap also works well to ensure that the animal is fully inside the trap and has to maneuver on the trigger plate, increasing the chances of a catch.

POOR J-CLIP QUALITY By jocko

After reading the reviews it looks like a COMMON PROBLEM!!! Door on x-large trap got blown-off by a raccoon. Told it can't be repaired because of the tolerances and fit of the door. Repaired it MYSELF with cable clamps! Captured (3) raccoons in 3 days since. X-Large Traps NEED REDESIGNED WITH ADDITIONAL/STRONGER CLIPS TO HOLD THE TRAP TOGETHER !!!!!

poor release catch By copperhead

The trap is very strongly constructed but the release catch is under too much tension to release easily. One of the door panels may be installed backward as the door panels bind in the full open position and put too much pressure on the catch. I was able to relocate the catch attachment to take pressure off the catch and the trap is useful but still difficult to set. I like the heavy construction and would purchase another but would need to see the catch assy on another trap to insure the pbm isn't a common one

Not Sure I Like This.... By RJForbes
Bought this XL trap from Havahart. I own 5 smaller Havahart traps already. Some have been really difficult to set and it seems like every time I buy one, the arming mechanism is different. THIS one was delivered to my home with absolutely no damage to the shipping box, but when I opened it up, 4 hinges and the black plastic trap door cap were broken off and loose in the box. I used some needle nose pliers to reattach the hinges. Then I couldn't figure out how to arm it. Every time I order traps from Havahart, the arming mechanism is different. Couldn't figure this one out until I found a video online. Arming it was easy, but the trigger plate was laying flat and would never trip that way. I finally figured out how to make the adjustments from the video, but the printed instructions left me very confused.
