The Deer Off® Story
When Athena Loucas moved from the Philadelphia area to a five acre property in the back country of North Stamford, she envisioned a beautiful flowering garden. Her new home bordered a forested area overlooking a lake. It was a haven for flowering things, wildlife and, unfortunately, deer. An environmentally concerned gardener, she carefully avoided chemical pesticides. She tried using all sorts of home remedies to create a deer repellent. Not a single homemade deer repellent was effective. Human hair clippings, strong smelling soaps, dried blood, moth balls and urine all required continuous application. The deer repellent odor faded in a few days or was washed away by rain or snow.
Her goal was to develop an effective deer repellent product with a dual deterrent (odor and taste factor) unpleasant to deer. A knowledgeable cook, she experimented using strong smelling and spicy foods in her deer repellents. Sectioning her garden into a lily bed, impatiens bed, hosta bed, tulips and yew, she applied various combinations of those deer repellent ingredients in each area.
Two and a half years later, after much trial and error, smelly kitchens and messy hands, she invented Deer Off®, the deer repellent solution to deer damage. Neighbors and friends were the "testers," they purchased the deer repellent product and passed the message along. A solution to a problem, a new product and a business were born. "The odor is like salad dressing, which deer find offensive," Athena Loucas says. All the active ingredients in Deer Off® deer repellent can be found in the kitchen.
