What works for me. By Owen

I have a Model#1078 and Model#1084 I have caught three squirrels in two years with the Model# 1084 I have caught over eighty squirrels with the Model 1078. I tried peanut butter and failed miserably. I use a jar lid filled with sunflower seeds and place it behind the floor pan/trigger mechanism forcing the squirrel to cross over the floor pan to get to the sunflower seeds. It works. Be sure to place the lid about one and one half inches behind the floor pan/trigger mechanism. The trigger mechanism out of the box is insufficient. Take a fine file or I use steel wool and polish the bar on the trap door and the whole trap door itself, the hook also. I do this frequently because they will corrode and become less effective. I do this on all moving mechanisms. Setting the trap door is a very delicate process. Do not push the bar all the way forward. Set it in just a way as to cause it to trigger easily. Also I placed a cardboard bottom at the entrance almost to the trigger mechanism and place a trail of sunflower seeds toward the trigger mechanism. Frequent use of silicone spray on all moving parts works well and the odor has no effect on the squirrel. The Model #1078 is by far, with manipulation, better than any other trap for squirrels. When it rains take the trap inside.

Squirrels are too smart ? By KMOX

I guess I must have the smartest squirrels around or your trap isn't sensitive enough to catch them. I even went and bought your x-small trap with the guillotine door thinking it might work better - HA - it's even worse than the medium 1-door trap.

Response From Havahart®
Patty : Consumer Relations Representative

We apologize for this experience and would like the opportunity to learn more. The trap should be able to trigger easily by poking the trip plate with a stick. Changing the bait placement can increase the catch rate by putting it in a way that will increase interaction with the trip plate.

Our Consumer Relations Team will be glad to provide troubleshooting assistance to help catch those squirrels. We can be reached at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242).

Well made but hasn\'t caught anything yet!! By Snow5164
I bought this to catch the little bush rabbits we have. I think they are taking the food out the sides and not going in the door , so far nothing caught.
Response From Havahart®
Lauren : Consumer Relations Representative
If the animals are stealing the bait and the trap is not triggering, additional baiting methods may be needed to catch this clever critter.

We would recommend tying or hanging the bait from the trap behind the trip plate. This will cause the animal to go further into the trap and work harder to gain access to the bait, increasing the chances of a successful catch. As an alternative, a small hole can be dug under the trap with the bait placed inside. This will also cause the animal to enter the trap and dig around, working harder to get the bait.

We hope this information has been helpful. Please contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) with any additional questions.

Top Quality Trap By Trapperboy12
This trap is very well made.  I got mine for 3 bucks at a yard sale but it is very effective. I put some peanut butter and peanuts in a small tray in the trap set it out and within 2 days I caught a pesky squirrel.  Super trap.

2 squirrels bagged By Wildbirdlover
Trapped 2 squirrels today using peanut butter. One of the great things about this trap is being able to attach a fishing line to the mechanism and manually activate the trap. More guaranteed catches.

Q.I lost my assembly instructions for a Havahart Medium one door trap. can you email the to me? Thank you

Instructions for the setup of this trap can be found at the link below.

Q.How to release trapped squirrel

When an animal has been caught, we recommend covering the trap with a towel or blanket to help keep the animal calm. To release the squirrel, stand behind the trap and carefully reach around to lift the door. A stick can be inserted through both sides the the trap to prop the door open. Before using a trap, we always suggest checking with your local or state Game Commission to determine the lawful method of releasing/relocating a captured wild or nuisance animal.

Q.Is this a live trap? I'm not interested in killing - just moving!

Yes, this is a live animal trap. Once the animal is caught they can be relocated. We recommend contacting your local Game Commission for local regulations on trapping and releasing animals in your area.
