Trap wont set. By L-Roy

My neighbor bought one of the model 1064 and became upset with it because when you bring the handle over to set the trap it will not stay set, as a results of his problem he gave it to me and told me to fix it for him or throw it in the dumpster. I am sure there is a adjustment to the trigger assembly that can be adjusted and make it work, I would appreciate some information on the trap that could make it work. I have a good pecan crop and the coons really like them, we have caught 14 squirrels with your smaller trap. Thanks L-Roy

Collapsing feature poor design. By Dillo Pickle

As stated before, failure to lock. Easy to Set, but the collapsible feature which I liked causes a problem. When collapsed, the door is held open, which stretches the spring that closes the locking bail. After sitting for a long time collapsed, I got it out and trapped an armadillo. It failed to lock and animal escaped. Moving the spring to a different rung to tighten fixed, but have to store uncollapsed or remove spring to insure it will work again. Kinda defeats the collapsing intent!

What works for me. By Owen

I have a Model#1078 and Model#1084 I have caught three squirrels in two years with the Model# 1084 I have caught over eighty squirrels with the Model 1078. I tried peanut butter and failed miserably. I use a jar lid filled with sunflower seeds and place it behind the floor pan/trigger mechanism forcing the squirrel to cross over the floor pan to get to the sunflower seeds. It works. Be sure to place the lid about one and one half inches behind the floor pan/trigger mechanism. The trigger mechanism out of the box is insufficient. Take a fine file or I use steel wool and polish the bar on the trap door and the whole trap door itself, the hook also. I do this frequently because they will corrode and become less effective. I do this on all moving mechanisms. Setting the trap door is a very delicate process. Do not push the bar all the way forward. Set it in just a way as to cause it to trigger easily. Also I placed a cardboard bottom at the entrance almost to the trigger mechanism and place a trail of sunflower seeds toward the trigger mechanism. Frequent use of silicone spray on all moving parts works well and the odor has no effect on the squirrel. The Model #1078 is by far, with manipulation, better than any other trap for squirrels. When it rains take the trap inside.

Don't Waster Your Money By slfarr78

My indoor cat darted out the door late one night. Bought this trap, set it up and tried it out several times to be sure that I had it set up correctly. I had a security camera set out to watch the trap and was excited when I saw my cat walk into the trap. However, I was angry when the trap door closed, obviously either not fast enough or not securely enough, and the cat darted back out the trap. This trap was returned to Lowes the next day. Thankfully I just trapped my cat 4 weeks later with a drop trap made from a different company when he should have been caught 3 weeks prior. Definitely go with a better made brand.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. If the cat was not fully inside the trap when the trigger was engaged, this could have permitted it to back out of the trap as the door may not have locked in place. We apologize for this experience and are happy to hear that your cat was eventually caught.

We appreciate this feedback and have shared these concerns with our Product Manager. Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-HAVAHART (1-855-542-8242) for additional assistance.

Positively a life and stress saver for me and my garden!! By LadyKeys

I've owned a large 2-door Havahart trap for about 7-8 years and can't tell you the number of woodchuck, possum, skunk, an occasional squirrel (I let them go right away in my yard) and one bunny (did the same thing with her. I chased after the same woodchuck for THREE YEARS - I know it was the same one because it lived in a shed 15 feet away from a 20x50' vegetable garden and grew to be almost the size of my large Cocker Spaniel! It destroyed tomatoes and anything it could get it's mouth on until I finally, FINALLY, got it once I bought the large trap. I had been borrowing a neighbor's small Havahart, was baiting it, setting it, and would find the bait gone and the trap sprung. I did this so many times until someone told me that the woodchuck was so big it was just backing out of the smaller trap - it was too large for the doors to lock. It was then I bought my own large trap and got that woodchuck right away! Since then the amount of "garden feeders" I've caught is unbelievable - it's like Wild Kingdom back here and yet there are no woods anymore due to the building of a Lowe's store. However I seem to have bent one side of the trap and that side no longer will lock. I did call Havahart and spoke with a wonderful girl who said I'd have to replace the trap or tie that end shut and use it as a one-door trap, which is what I've been doing. It's my fault I've bent that side of the trap so it doesn't work properly and if I decide to purchase again I most certainly will get another Havahart - mine has been a life-saver and also a good means to lower my stress levels because of these varmints! This year I've caught SIX teenage woodchuck so far - once there were two in the trap at the same time and I can't understand how they did that. Did they hold hands going in the trap?? I need to get the parents and do this hopefully before my tomatoes ripen. These babies have already cleaned out a squash patch twice and that's grounds for WW3!! I'll get them and set the trap every day - even without bait I catch something!! It is a WONDERFUL PRODUCT and I highly recommend any of Havahart's traps!

Racoon Trapped and Released in Less than 24 Hours First Attempt! By D

Had a raccoon that was continually helping himself to the deer corn and supplements I was putting out for 6 deer that feed in our backyard. The raccoon seemed to be getting more aggressive toward the deer and was feeding in broad daylight, scaring the deer away. I had never trapped any animal before. I bought the large Havahart two door trap. It arrived Monday July 3rd, 2017 late afternoon. I baited the trap with marshmallows, a little bit of left over taco ground beef, and some grease drippings. Woke up at 5:30 am on July 4th to find the raccoon was successfully trapped. By 8am he was in his new woodland home 6 miles away. Release was flawless and the raccoon was set free unharmed. Great purchase!

works well..need instructions for us newbies By saamcat

I purchased this due to the easy set as I was using a friends raccoon trap for ferals....Took awhile to get just one door open instead of both doors..this would have been easier if it came with instructions..I am new to this TNR..However I did figure it out and did catch a feral first night I used...so overall am happy.

good cage, but handles need to be color coded. By Lin

The trap is great to TNR (Trap Neuter Release) cats. However, the handle that opens the trap door should be color coded/painted in red since many vet techs confuse the handle that lifts the cage and the handle that opens the trap door, thereby accidentally releasing a feral cat. This situation happened again yesterday, but unfortunately this time the cat bit the vet tech and had to be euthanized due to potential rabbis. Please paint the door lift handle a red color and write on this handle something to differentiate the two handles that are close together on top of the cage to avoid this type of confusion.

Do not buy this garbage trap. By Trace

Worst trap ever, large animals just walk right through it. Literally have to have raccoon stand on trigger and jump up and down for it to trigger. The force for the 2 doors is too tight or something. Single door, cardboard rest on handle triggers fine, but the 2 doors open ... worse trap known to mankind.

Need better instructions By echo

When I pulled the trap out of the box the trigger rod was stuck through the top and the back panel and was difficult to remove. Couldn't the trigger rod be fastened to the side of the trap for easy removal? And it would be helpful to note in the instructions that when the trigger rod is threaded into the loops on the underside of the trigger pan it should be below the first horizontal wire of the trap and above the bottom wire of the trap. The instructions do not state the height at which to thread it and the pictures in both picture 4, where the trigger rod is behind the hands and can not be seen and picture 6 of the instructions do not clearly show the height at which to thread the trigger rod. Threading it above the first wire will essentially make the trap inoperable as it will take too much pressure to set the trap. The door also is kind of touchy and will not set and/or close on it's own if the surface the trap is set on is not level.

Q&A
Q.I lost my assembly instructions for a Havahart Medium one door trap. can you email the to me? Thank you
A.

Instructions for the setup of this trap can be found at the link below.

http://woodstream.scene7.com/is/content/woodstream/havahart/us/resources/instructions/hh-us-instructions-1078.pdf

Q.How to release trapped squirrel
A.

When an animal has been caught, we recommend covering the trap with a towel or blanket to help keep the animal calm. To release the squirrel, stand behind the trap and carefully reach around to lift the door. A stick can be inserted through both sides the the trap to prop the door open. Before using a trap, we always suggest checking with your local or state Game Commission to determine the lawful method of releasing/relocating a captured wild or nuisance animal.

Q.Is this a live trap? I'm not interested in killing - just moving!
A.

Yes, this is a live animal trap. Once the animal is caught they can be relocated. We recommend contacting your local Game Commission for local regulations on trapping and releasing animals in your area.
