Havahart® Cat Trap Rescue Kits Aid in Reuniting Pets with Owners in Aftermath of Natural Disasters
NEWS RELEASE - For Immediate Release
Easy-To-Set Traps are Ideal for Catching, Transporting and Short Term Care of Lost or Abandoned Cats
LITITZ, Pa., July 19, 2013 -- Despite massive relief efforts to repair destruction caused by natural disasters like the recent outbreak of Midwestern tornados, one population still remains out on the streets. Stray cats present an unexpected challenge in the effort to restore damaged cities and reunite households with every member of the family. In an effort to assist in catching, transporting and providing short term care of lost and abandoned cats in the wake of natural disasters, Havahart®, the leading manufacturer of live animal traps, presents Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kits.
"When the wrath of Mother Nature strikes, hundreds of domestic cats can be lost or abandoned," says Alison Girschick, Category Development Associate at Havahart. "Often these animals are disoriented, frightened and shy; they will not come up to a stranger to be rescued and need to be trapped. Havahart® Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kits provide a safe and effective way to trap lost domestic cats. Many have ID collars or microchips and can easily be reunited with their owners."
Confining Stray Cats
Havahart® Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kits are easy to set, bait and release. Constructed of sturdy rust-resistant wire mesh with steel reinforcements, the cat trap is built to last against rust and corrosion. The trap measures 32" x 10.75" x 12.75" when assembled and collapses easily for space saving storage when not in use.
The Cat Trap Rescue Kit comes with a burlap cover to help camouflage the metal frame and soothe the cat once it is trapped. A trap divider allows users to easily feed and water the trapped cat without handling the animal. Using the trap divider to isolate the cat at one end or the other, the trap can be opened from either end for safe cleaning and feeding without risk of the cat escaping. A convenient handle makes for easy transportation.
"Stay close to the trap after it is set," says Girschick. "Once a cat is trapped, it is important to cover them immediately with the burlap cover and put them in a safe and quiet place. Trapped cats left unattended can become anxious, be released by well-meaning Samaritans or fall prey to mischief.
Cat Trapping Tips:
Prior to trapping animals, including cats, it is important to familiarize yourself with local laws pertaining to your community. To ensure humane control of stray cats, follow these guidelines when trapping cats with the Havahart® Feral Cat Trap Rescue Kit:
- Place the cat trap on a level surface against a building wall in an area where stray cats are often observed.
- After setting the cat trap, leave the immediate area but check the trap often.
- After the cat has been caught, place the burlap cover over the cage to help calm the cat.
- Keep children and pets away from the cat trap.
- Check with a veterinarian or animal control group to determine if you may give the cat food or water before you transport the cat. Follow the instructions for placing food and water in the Havahart Feral Cat Trap.
- If you choose to move the animal to a carrier or crate, make sure the carrier is large enough to also hold food, a water bowl and a litter pan.
- When transporting the cat in a car, place a trash bag or tarp under the cat trap and keep the trap covered. Never transport the cat in the closed trunk of the car.
"Left on their own, stray cats will die from starvation, disease, get hit by cars or worse," says Girschick. "Failure to control the stray cat population amounts to inhumane treatment. Trapping cats in order to reunite them with their owners is simply the right thing to do."
