Why poison critters venturing into your yard with harmful chemical pesticides when organic alternatives work every bit as efficiently, yet are gentler on the environment than their chemical cousins? Havahart® is committed to providing alternative critter control products to help foster a cleaner, safer and healthier world. | What is it? | Components | | What is it? A hugely popular, organic and environmentally sensitive way to control critters is Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Used by farmers and gardeners the world around, IPM is a pest control strategy that uses a wide array of complementary methods including natural predators and parasites, pest-resistant varieties, cultural practices, biological controls, various physical techniques, and pesticides only as a last resort. IPM is an ecological approach that can significantly reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides. Components An IPM system has six components: - Finding acceptable pest levels: IPM focuses on control rather than complete annihilation of critters.
- Preventative cultural practices: choose plant varieties that work best in local growing areas and maintain a healthy crop. The healthy crop is the first line of defense.
- Monitoring: Regular observation is key-visual inspection, insect traps and other measurement tools will help you keep a record of how the control is going.
- Mechanical controls: If steps 1-3 do not work up this p
oint, hand-picking, insect barriers, traps and vacuuming are efficient ways to remove critters. - Biological controls: use the predator-prey relationship to your advantage. For example, predatory bugs can be purchased that target the specific nuisance insects in your garden. If animals are the problem rather than insects, it would not be a good move to purchase a larger animal. For example, if deer are your problem, it would be unwise to purchase a tiger or mountain lion to keep the deer out of your garden.
- Repellents: As a last resort, if all other steps fail, the usage of repellents can be brought into the mix. Repellents can be organic or chemical-based. Organics generally are designed to initiate the fear of a predator in a critter-that instinct conditions the animal to stay away.
Chemicals work with the same principal but may do more harm than good in the long run. With repeated use of chemical pesticides, the critters you try to control build up a resistance to that which is being applied. The same chemicals often kill off the natural predators of the critter you originally sought to be rid of! Havahart® offers a variety of OMRI Listed® and USDA approved for organic gardening animal repellents that are not only effective but also gentler on the environment. | | | | | | |
