Voles, also known as meadow mice, are often mistaken for the typical house mouse. Gray in color, the most notable difference is the vole's much shorter tail.
Voles cause problems to landscape, and gardens where there are thick layers of mulch.
For the homeowner they will first notice vole damage from the burrowing. The voles will do damage while digging for bulbs or underground food such as roots or potatoes. They also feast on the part of the plant that is closest to the ground. In the winter they prefer fruit trees.
They leave a mark on the plant from their incisors. The incisors will make very small grooves on the damaged part of the plant.
Voles can do a lot of damage in agricultural situations due to their sheer number.
