Raccoons

Raccoons are at the very top of the list of critters out to destroy your vegetable garden. If you do not have a garden, then perhaps raccoons may find their way to your trash cans, curbside garbage or bird feeders.

Found throughout North America, raccoons are a problem for home owners all over.

Control Options

By far the best way to deal with raccoons is to deny them food and den options. This entails removing or restricting access to bird feeders, garbage cans, and entrances to homes such as chimneys.

By leaving the area around your home void of food sources and denning sites, a raccoon will have to move on to a new area to find what it needs.

If you find yourself with a raccoon that has already take up residency, we offer the following solutions for you:

Raccoon Repellents
Repellents are a good alternative to a physical barrier and are also less expensive.

Havahart® Critter Ridder® is a patented pepper based repellent.  OMRI Listed and USDA approved for Organic Gardening Critter Ridder® is available in both liquid and granular applications.  Critter Ridder® can be used indoors (granular) and outdoors (granular and liquid).  One application of Critter Ridder® lasts up to 30 days.
Havahart® also offers Get Away®, our value priced ready-to-spray raccoon repellent that lasts 7-10 days.

A motion activated water repellent is also a useful way to protect vegetable gardens from marauding night time visitors.  Easy-to-use, convenient and quick, Spray Away has motion and heat sensor triggers that detect an animal nearby.  Similar to a sprinkler, once activated, the electronic valve releases 3 seconds of spray from an attached hose.

Raccoon Traps

A well-positioned Havahart® live animal cage trap along with a tempting raccoon treat will make the trapping task simple. Unique safety features make this the ideal trapping solution.  Humane Havahart® raccoon traps come in a variety of styles and sizes including our new Easy Set live animal cage trap which is ideal for the first time trapper.  Before trapping check state and game regulations for using raccoon traps within your state.

Exclusion

If a raccoon is living in your chimney, wait until nightfall when raccoons are most active and place a wire screen cover on the openings so the raccoon will have no way to get in.   If you hear the sounds of raccoon kits, allow access to the area until the baby raccoons begin to follow their mother out at night to gather food (approximately 8 weeks of age).  Once you are sure the area is empty, you can block the access.

To keep raccoons out of gardens, a fence with an electric wire that shocks is the best option. A plain fence will not do the trick since raccoons are expert climbers.

Fi-Shock, a sister brand of Havahart®, offers a wide variety of electric fencing solutions that can help you keep raccoons off your property.

Other Raccoon Control Tips

Raiding Garbage Cans
Has your garbage can been tipped over? Trash bags torn apart?

Metal garbage cans are shiny and raccoons, by their curious nature, are instantly attracted. The array of garbage inside is a bonus to feast upon.

The best solution is to spray garbage cans and bags with the liquid Critter Ridder®, which repels raccoons along with 5 other species of animals. Additionally, we recommend you to fasten the lid securely with rope, bungee cords, chains, or even weights placed on the lid. Finally, store your garbage can in a shed.

Inside your Home
Raccoons will venture into the house, attic, or roof because they are appealing nesting areas. They will often choose an un-fluted chimney to use as their den and will even give birth there.

If raccoons have found their way into your house, close off the access route. If you have a pet door, make sure it can be locked at night. This is a common entryway raccoons and other nuisance animals use to invade your home.  If you hear the sounds of raccoon kits, allow access to the area until the baby raccoons begin to follow their mother out at night to gather food (approximately 8 weeks of age).  Once you are sure the area is empty, you can block the access.
