Opossums

Opossums are opportunistic omnivores with a very broad range of diet. Their unspecialized biology, flexible diet and reproductive strategy make them successful colonizers and survivors in unsettled times.

When threatened or harmed, they will “play possum”, mimicking the appearance and smell of a sick or dead animal.

Control Options

Opossum and humans interact when the opossum causes damage by digging for roots and tear into garbage bags.

Havahart® recommends the following opossum control options:

Opossum Traps
A well-positioned Havahart® live animal cage trap along with a tempting opossum treat will make the trapping task simple. Unique safety features make this the ideal trapping solution.  Humane Havahart® opossum traps come in a variety of styles and sizes including our new Easy Set live animal cage trap which is ideal for the first time trapper.  Before trapping check state and game regulations within your state.

They should be placed where activity has been seen. Transport opossums at least five miles away for release in a suitable habitat.  Avoid trapping during early spring and summer as young may be orphaned by the capture of their mother.

Opossum Exclusion

A reoccurring theme in preventing and controlling critters from entering unwanted places on your property is to block them out, with fencing or hardware cloth.

Whether an opossum has made a home under your deck, shed, or house, simply blocking entry is key.

When it comes to keeping critters from the garden, chicken-wire fence is a good way to go. Exclusion of opossum from gardens can be accomplished with a fence built of poultry wire. The fence should be four feet high with the top 12 to 18 inches of the fence bent outward, away from the garden, and not attached to any support.

As an alternative, any standard wire fence can be made opossum proof by stretching a parallel electrically charged wire near the top of the fence, three inches out from the mesh. Shock treatment is an effective means at humanly conditioning a critter to stay out. Havahart® offers a number of electric fence kits that are ideal for keeping opossums off your garden.

Raiding Garbage Cans
Has your garbage can been tipped over? Trash bags torn apart?

The array of garbage inside is a bonus to feast upon.  We recommend you to fasten the lid securely with rope, bungee cords, chains, or even weights placed on the lid. Finally, store your garbage can in a shed.
