Control Options

Feral Cat Control Options

Feral cats can be humanely controlled!

When you choose to rescue stray cats, it is important that you contact your local humane league, animal shelter or other similar organizations to learn the local regulations and policies pertaining to your community before trapping.

The majority of these organizations can be found in the telephone directory. Please be certain of the course of action you would like to pursue before rescuing a stray cat.

Trap, Neuter, and Adopt Programs

Before trapping, call your local humane league, SPCA or similar organization to discuss their suggested method of rescuing stray cats and all of the options available to you. It is best to follow the guidelines they endorse when transporting the caged cat to their organization.

Trap, Neuter, and Release Programs

Contact your local veterinarian or SPCA for information concerning any neuter and release program and options that are available to pursue this course of action.

Relocating Captured Cats

State, county and municipal laws related to cats vary. Consult with local humane league, animal shelter, or local or state Game Commission to determine the correct method of relocating a captured stray cat.

Stray Cat Rescue Kit

The Havahart® Stray Cat Rescue Kit (Model 1099) is ideal for catching, transporting and short term care of a stray cat. Easy to set, bait, and release. Collapsible—pops up in seconds. Kit includes rescue cage, cage divider, cover, door hook, and complete instructions.

Rescue Cage: The trap is 32x10x12 when assembled. Manufactured with 12 and 14 gauge wire, which will allow the trap to be used multiple times.

Cage Divider: The divider allows the cage to be used as a feeding and watering area. Slide it through the cage mesh, open the door and place food or water in the cage.

Burlap Cover: The cover has a dual purpose:

  • to help camouflage the trap
  • to soothe the cat once it is trapped

Do not attempt to handle captured cats. Do not leave children unattended near a captured cat.

Cat Repellents

Critter Library - Feral Cat Control Options - RepellentHavahart® Critter Ridder® is a pepper based, OMRI® Listed deterrent that is compliant for use in organic gardening and available in both liquid and granular applications.

Critter Ridder® can be used indoors (granular) and outdoors (granular and liquid). One application of Critter Ridder® lasts up to 30 days.

A motion activated water repellent is also a useful way to protect landscap and gardens from stray cats. Easy-to-use, convenient and quick, Spray Away has motion and heat sensor triggers that detect an animal nearby. Similar to a sprinkler, once activated, the electronic valve releases 3 seconds of spray from an attached hose. The sudden motion, water spray and sprinkler sound combine to startle the cat, sending it away. Check out our new Spray Away Elite, a hose free motion sensored system that is so convenient and easy to use.
